The 7th Birthday

Its a quickie today for a few reasons.. I’m not on my laptop as my cooling fan is broken (or something like that) so I’m using the kids PC and I don’t like it! I’ve already spent half an hour just trying to remember my WordPress password and eventually I resorted to resetting it, the space bar on this keyboard is rubbish, the keys on the keyboard don’t feel right so I am struggling to type.. well you get the idea!

So today was Ben’s 7th birthday! I think he’s had a good day.. he definitely liked all his presents šŸ™‚ He got some Lego Nexo Knights sets and a Pokemon TCG deck. I didn’t make a cake for today, (I’ll do that when I finally get round to organising him a party next week), but I made birthday cookies instead and they were delicious!

Other than birthday things, today has been the normal swimming and forest school for the kids. Thomas recently switched to the morning forest school group and today he came home and told me he’d really enjoyed it šŸ™‚ This is huge as last week I wasn’t sure I’d get him back after half term. So that made me much happier šŸ™‚

Jasmine did well in her swimming lesson again and did some more good diving (well, not really diving as she only started learning to dive last week, but she’s making a good start!)

Gordon, Thomas and I managed a 3.5km Pokemon walk while the others were at forest school this afternoon.

To keep it real I also feel like ought to be honest and mention the moments of meltdown and shouting we’ve had today as both boys struggled with the birthday idea.. but it was only a few moments really and a few calm words helped them both.

The day ended with Harry Potter aloud, excitement as we saw a Chansey on the Pokemon tracker I use, disappointment after Gordon went to get the Chansey but failed, and in the time it has taken me to type this Gordon has taken my laptop apart and discovered it is too broken to fix and needs a new part šŸ™

Chessington Zoo – Ben’s birthday day out

For the last couple of years, rather than have the whole big crazy party thing we have taken the kids out somewhere special for their birthday. This year Ben decided he wanted to go back to Chessington Zoo – the same place we went this time last year. It is the same place as the theme park but only the zoo part is open at this time of year .. perfect for us because it doesn’t get too busy and it is a lot cheaper for a zoo day than when the full park is open!

This year was made even more special because lots of family members and some friends came with us too, so Ben had lots of people to spoil him throughout the day šŸ™‚

Because we’ve been to the zoo before the kids knew exactly what they wanted to see first .. the SeaLife Centre of course!

1

You could tell we’d not been to an aquarium/sealife centre for a while as the kids couldn’t get enough of the animals! They really do love fish, sharks, rays .. really everything to do with sea life. By the time we’d walked round and found our way to the shop it was lunch time.

After lunch we started on the larger animals. Following the “Trail of the Kings” we saw the Fossa, Lynx, Binturong, Tiger and Gorilla. This is one of my favourite parts of the zoo because I love the big cats and gorillas. The kids did like looking at them but because they don’t tend to do much when they aren’t eating, they don’t want to stand and look at them for as long as I could!

2

We also compared ourselves to a gorilla …. Gorilla’s have much longer arms than us it seems!

3

Next we decided to go to see the animals in Amazu. We almost missed this part last year because we left it so late to go, so I was keen to make sure we fitted it in this year! We all love theĀ monkey walk-through so that was the obvious place to start. We had quite a wait to get in, and then when it was our turn there weren’t many monkeys out as they didn’t like the wind! But we got to see some Golden-Headed Lion Tamarins and a couple of Geoffrey Marmosets.

4

We also saw the Capybara, the Spider Monkeys, the Giant Wood Rail and (Jasmine’s favourite) the Ecuadorian Red Lored Amazon.

And then it was over to Sealion Bay with minutes to spare for the start of the Sealion show.. possible our most favourite part of the whole zoo! The Sealions really do put on a great display and had everyone laughing and clapping at their antics and tricks.

5Opposite Sealion Bay are the Creepy Caves.. Well, anything creepy has my kids jumping for joy so that was where we headed next. They weren’t disappointed as we saw lizards, snakes, spiders, frogs and beetles. Ben loves the lizards, Thomas was happy to see a tarantula and Jasmine was excited by, um, all of it actually!

6The final animal of the day for us was the penguins. The penguins are new at the zoo and weren’t there this time last year so we were all excited to see them. We’d walked past them a couple of times already had watched them briefly but were keen to see the feeding and the “show”. It was well done and was fun to see the animals both in and out of the water, catching the fish that the keepers were giving them. Penguins are always fun to watch!

7Finally, just before it was time to leave we managed to squeeze in a trip through Hocus Pocus Hall. We couldn’t persuade any of the kids to go in last year (it is a haunted house attraction) but their friends wanted to go in this year so the boys decided they’d try it out. Jasmine was adamant she wouldn’t like it (and to be honest she probably wouldn’t have done), but the boys did well and faced their fears! It was actually me who freaked out the most as they had the “revolving wall” thing and I HATE that! I closed my eyes and held on to Gordon until we were through! The boys quite enjoyed most of it, although I think some of the optical illusion stuff confused Ben. Thomas only decided he wanted out when something jumped out at him! But then I found a farting chair, which they both loved šŸ˜‰ And the very end was a mirror maze, which Thomas does enjoy so they both came out quite happy šŸ™‚

We really enjoyed our day at the zoo and I have a feeling it will be requested again for Ben’s birthday next year!

8th Birthday Week

It was over a week ago now that we celebrated Thomas and Jasmine’s 8th birthday and I still haven’t got round to blogging it. So here is a quick round-up of what we got up to..

They had a really great couple of “birthday” days. On their birthday they woke early and we opened all the family presents. Ā Jasmine got a Furby and some Lego Ninjago and Thomas got lots of Lego (Ninjago and City). As we were going out in the afternoon we managed to contain the building marathon to the Ninjago bits, so they both got on with building their models and AirJitzu sets. Ben had also been desperate for an AirJitzu set so he had used some of his pocket money to get himself one and they all played together for the rest of the morning.

In the afternoon we went to HE Group as normal, Jasmine and Thomas joined in French and played with their friends, and we had taken cake in so everyone sang Happy Birthday to them and we enjoyed cake.

On Friday our car was going into the garage again and we had a trip to Build a Bear planned for Jasmine. One of her friends came round and we (me, Grandma, Jasmine, Ben and our friends) got on the train to Croydon. Gordon and Thomas had taken the car to the garage and were meeting us at Build a BearĀ after picking Granny up at the train station. The plan was for Jasmine, Ben and their friend to get a bear and Gordon would take Thomas round the shops while they waited for us (Thomas had chosen to haveĀ a bigger, more expensive present and no other “treat”, while Jasmine chose a less expensive main present and a trip to Build a Bear), but when we got there we saw they had Toothless, the dragon from How to Train Your Dragon.. which just happens to be Thomas’ most favourite thing to watch at the moment. He asked if he could have one and it almost broke me to say no to him. He was so sad but he didn’t create a fuss and Gordon took him out while we carried on with the others. While Jasmine was choosing her bear I spoke to my mum and we both agreed we couldn’t bare Thomas not to have Toothless, so we went halves and got him one as a surprise!

Jasmine loved her experience šŸ™‚ She chose a Reindeer, named it Dasher and dressed it in a sparkly cape and shoes. Ben also chose Toothless the Dragon.

When we’d finished we gave Thomas his Toothless and he was so happy he burst onto tears. It was so sweet! He really was over the moon!

On Friday afternoon we had a little tea party with some more friends. The kids made Muffin Pizza’s, we had a pinata and watched How to Train Your Dragon.

Birthday 1 Birthday 2The rest of the weekend was spent building Lego, playing with Furby and taking it easy not doing much.

Jasmine 8

Up’s and down’s

After the busy-ness of Wednesday and Thursday it has been nice over the last two days to take things a little easier. Yesterday morning I went to a friends house for her Macmillan Coffee Morning. It was a lovely morning andĀ I enjoyed cake and cups of tea in relative peace while the kids played at home with daddy. In the afternoon we needed to go to the Chinese supermarket to pick up some ingredients for our dinner.. and this is where things went wrong. The kids obviously weren’t in the mood for shopping and were, in all honesty, horrible. It was so bad in fact that we left without half the things we needed!

Back at home and things didn’t really improve much and at any given point for the next couple of hours someone was either shouting or crying. Jasmine went upstairs quite upset, so I sat in bed with her until she had calmed down. I’m sure every household has times like that but even knowing that doesn’t make it easier! Anyway, once she had calmed down I decided it was time to approach the topic of the books I had bought for her recently, about growing up. She has been showing signs of this for a few months, with mood swings and other things, so I had been waiting for the right time to talk to her. She got very excited about having “special books” just for her and we had a good chat about the start of puberty and what she can expect to happen to her. I didn’t go into too much depth as I want to take it slow, but she was so keen and interested in it all I think we’ll end up covering more over the next few days.

The day did end much better though and Gordon managed to pull together a pretty good semi-chinese meal and then the kids did 15 minutes of Khan Acadamy each before bed.

Today is my birthday! So at breakfast I opened my cards and present. The kids (Gordon!) bought me a speaker/dock for my phone so I can listen to music in the kitchen while I’m cooking šŸ™‚ After breakfast I managed to get all three kids to the table to do some written maths work. We are working through some very simple maths to begin with, mostly practicing writing numbers and going over simple maths facts. Thomas and Ben completed three sheets and Jasmine flew through four. Once they’d finished Jasmine and Thomas went on Khan Acadamy for 10/15 minutes each too while Ben did some wipe-clean alphabet sheets and activity books (his choice!)

In the middle of our work session Gordon had been to collect his sister from the train station – she is over from Canada and visited us today. The kids spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon showing Aunty Laura their great paper aeroplanes, until we nipped to the shops for a few bits including more birthday presents for me! (I got a new phone case)

Later in the afternoon we went to Messy Church where the kids decorated cakes, played in a tuff spot with compost and plastic animals, and joined in a Ā game of football. And the day ended, once the kids had gone to bed, with a Chinese takeaway as my birthday treat šŸ™‚
